This is way OVER - DUE!
We are still w/out internet at the new home, therefore I'm at our local public library with Marleigh sitting on the floor next to me reading children's books while I attempt and catch up on E-Mail, etc.
I can promise a proper update ASAP, and hopefully a finished BOOK in the near future, as well.
In the meantime, be patient -- and as always, thank you so much for all of your support in this project.

Upcoming Events
I can't believe that it's been this long since I've posted anything. It's been very hectic... moving a family of four is not an easy task... not at all. *sigh* It will all be completed Saturday -- and hopefully by Monday we will be unpacked and fully functional in our new home. Hopefully I'll have some hair left at that stage, and let's cross our fingers that what hair I have yet to rip out of my head hasn't turned grey.
More importantly, there are two events coming up in the near future that I'd love for everyone to step out and support. The first one, is tomorrow evening... of course I'm a little bit behind in promoting this, however, as I've explained above --
Mommy is losing her fucking mind over this move! No, I don't speak to my children that way... just my husband.
So, tomorrow evening -- at The City Tavern Club on M Street -- from 8pm - Midnight; Luke's Wings (if you are a first time reader -- the non-profit that I'm supporting with the proceeds from my children's book - Andy's Dad) and Fifty-Six will be bringing you a USO Cocktail Party, 1940's style.
Entertainment will be provided by The Sultan's of Swing. Dress the occasion if you feel so inclined. Yes, finger-wave the hair ladies... and make sure that your stockings have a seam up the back to be accurate. Salute the troops with a 40's flair! Sounds like a fabulous time, to me... I'm really disappointed that we are knee deep in moving the next few days -- or I'd be there, 100%.
If you'd like to learn more about Luke's Wings, or purchase tickets to the event -- http://www.lukeswings.org/ ($35 in advance or $45 at the door). Your ticket gets you two drink tickets as well... and don't forget your money will be supporting the boys that fight for our Freedom, and their families.
Now, on to event number two -- which I will be attending (all the more reason for you to come out...)

lucky.
I cannot believe how blessed I am. As I sit here working on the blogs, and sending out a few E-Mails, I'm listening to my children coloring and talking about silly things at my feet. I must be the luckiest woman in the world to not only have two perfect little ones, but to get to stay at home with them, has been amazing. It's given me a chance to really reach for and achieve my dreams. As cliche as it may sound -- while watching Sarah Palin last night, and hearing her journey from PTA Hockey Mom to Governor of Alaska; I was so proud to be an American Mom, that is taking hold of something that she has always dreamed of doing.
It hasn't been an easy road for us these last few months, but the rewards that we have been experiencing from the kids have been worth the bumps in the road. And, if I had never decided to quit my job and stay at home, I never would have finally written Andy's Dad. I've been talking about writing this book for over a year, and it's finally done. We are so close, and I'm so damn excited. As soon as we get the last illustrations in, we'll be good to go! Not to mention, "Andy's Dad" will have it's first public mention/promotion at the 5678 Comedy Show to benefit Luke's Wings on the 13th of September! (Get your tickets, here)
I've had a few inquires from people wanting to promote "Andy's Dad" for me on their blogs, or via. other media outlets. I say -- more power to you! I appreciate the support, and am willing to get the word out about this book and the cause that the proceeds will be supporting in any way possible! If you are interested in any of the art-work, or a simple write up from myself or the illustrator please e-mail me via. SLH119@hotmail.com or you can contact me on Facebook (Shannon Koprivich-Jones). If you are on Facebook, please join the group -- "Andy's Dad" -- A Children's Book! And, the same goes for any of you out there on Host Committee's or those chairing upcoming Fall fundraisers.... I'd be more then happy to give you a little bit of promo. through either or my blogs... just let me know what you want to post. I'm really looking forward to having the time to be involved with the upcoming charity events and functions this fall.

SUITED FOR CHANGE!
I received a request to use the blog for a little bit of promotion for something other then Andy's Dad or Luke's Wings. I almost immediately obliged. If the least that I can do is put the information out there, so that all 4 of my readers can check it out -- I am more then happy. Especially when it is a cause as great as this Suited for Change.
A lady named Marlene Hall contacted me with information about the soiree that Suited for Change is putting on later this month... not only am I happy to put the info. out there for all of you to look into. I plan on attending their upcoming event!
Ladies and Gentleman, that's legit. I count my lucky starts on several occasions that a man named Christopher Jones walked into my life. Or I could still be a single mama, trying to raise two children, work, hold it together, you know... do it all. It's not easy. Not to mention the women that don't have the financial resources to educate themselves, let alone afford a pant suit to wear to the one job interview they have been able to nail down. Sometimes, it's a lot harder then it looks on the surface people. Suited for Change, I dig it. I encourage everyone to please check out more about them at http://www.suitedforchange.org/ or http://www.thewomensalliance.org/
Now, on to the fun stuff... the gallery soiree!

Suited for Change is a founding member of The Women's Alliance, a national organization of independent community-based "sister organizations" who provide professional attire, career skills training and related services to low-income women. Founded in 1992, Suited for Change provides professional clothing and ongoing career and life skills education to these women to increase their employment and job retention potential and to contribute to their economic independence. Their services are available at no charge and by referral only to low-income women who have completed job readiness programs and are seeking employment.

I try and attend anything that's deemed a soiree. It just sounds fabulous. And, personally -- I love feeling as if I am a part of something fabulous. I have to say though, it's not just the fact that their event is a soiree that will make it amazing. This cause is an important one! Please support Suited for Change!

EXCITING NEWS FOR ANDY'S DAD!

HEY EVERYONE! HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND!!
YES, THAT'S RIGHT -- I'VE GOT MORE PROMO. AND GOODNESS TO PASS ON ABOUT ANDY'S DAD AND LUKE'S WINGS! WE NOT ONLY HAVE ANOTHER FUNDRAISER THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE A GREAT TIME COMING UP, BUT ANDY'S DAD WILL BE GETTING IT'S VERY FIRST BIT OF PUBLIC PROMOTION!
In honor of our nation's heroes, 5678 is staging a one-night-only comedy show and art auction to raise money for Luke's Wings, a non-profit organization supporting service members who have been wounded in the War on Terror.
Join Washington DC's fresh, fun, performance group 5678 for a night of comedy hosted by the engaging and dynamic Justin Purvis (Washington Improve Theater). Followed by an art auction hosted by 5678 cast members. Guaranteed to be the funniest art auction DC has ever seen! All proceeds from this event to benefit Luke's Wings. Luke's Wings provides support, planning, services and fares needed to bring families to the Washington area to visit service members hospitalized here. Recognizing the difficulties families encounter as they make their way to their loved ones' side, Luke's Wings partners with corporations to ease the burden on families and veterans during their visit.

Coward.
I never thought that I would have to actually post/blog about this subject, on the blog for Andy's Dad. I expect the irritation, border-line hate mail from MY blog. My personal blog, rather (www.abartendersword.blogspot.com). The one where I express all of my own beliefs, political opinions, etc. However, I never expected to receive a nasty e-mail/attack regarding the fact that I am the author of a children's book, in which the proceeds will be donated to charity. How dare you...
Will the coward that stated: "I cannot believe that you support war-mongers monetarily, and at the cost of little children." please stand up. I didn't think so. Because, you are a coward. If you would like to learn more about yourself, and what YOU stand for, please follow the link that the header of this post will provide for you.
Who do you think you are? I cannot believe that I am about to defend myself, my book, and my cause to someone that obviously doesn't have a clue as to what America is all about... but, I feel that it's necessary... this book, and project have been so important to me, and I take great offense when people such as the anonymous hate-mailer attack.
First and foremost, this book is non-partisan. It has no political stance. It falls neither towards the left, nor towards the right. It is neither for nor against the war. It was written with three purposes.
Number one, to be a beneficial tool to the spouses and children of those that fight for our freedom.
Number two, to bring hope to the families of our nation's heroes.
And, finally - Number three, to raise money for an absolutely upstanding, and outstanding cause - Luke's Wings.
I would you encourage whomever has taken it upon themselves to attack me, my book, this cause, and even our servicemen and women by calling them warmongers to keep their opinions to themselves, as no one here involved with the book, (I won't speak for those at Luke's Wings, although I can bet they'd agree)-- care how you feel. This is an important cause, and we will continue with efforts to support those that fight and put their lives on the line so that you can continue to shoot off your ignorant mouth.
For those following this blog to follow the progress of Andy's Dad, I'm sorry for the interruption and somewhat cranky post. I couldn't let this one go by without a response. And, I promise that we'll be back to the regularly scheduled updates on Andy's Dad, events for Luke's Wings, illustrations, and the like... In fact, I've got good news! Stay tuned!
Have a Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!

Luke's Wings, Luke's Wings, I heart Luke's Wings!
I just thought that I would share with everyone that the Red, White, and Blue Summer Closer that Luke's Wings put on last Thursday at The Rookery was a success! They were able to raise enough money to fly two families to their wounded loved ones at Walter Reed, or Bethesda Naval! Unfortunately, I was too bogged down with boxes, moving, etc. to tear away from the house/family for the evening. I was beyond bummed that I didn't make it, and even more bummed when I heard just how fabulous the turn out was.

There are going to be plenty more benefits and events to attend this fall, I can promise you that. Next up will be the 5-6-7-8 performance on Sept. 13th -- for more information, follow the link provided in the header on this post, or check out this article!
5-6-7-8 -- A Night of Comedy to Benefit Luke's Wings

Here is another opportunity to come out and support Luke's Wings, check out some good improve. comedy and an art auction -- all rolled into one! Who doesn't love to laugh? AND -- this even happens to fall on a Saturday night; so all of you folks that love to use the "it's a school night" excuse... better show your lovely faces! Apparently, they are promising this to be the funniest art auction that DC has ever seen! You won't want to miss it...

new illustrations for Andy's Dad, just in!
Okay, so I know that I should probably keep these under wraps until everything is all put together and published -- however, I am too damn excited! Besides, nothing will compare to the way that OUR finished product looks when everything all comes together. And there has been something extremely comforting while working on the manuscript, and receiving illustrations being able to share them with people. I truly enjoy the feedback, the encouragement, and the support, that I have gotten from especially my closest of friends. Believe it or not, writing a book is a little bit scary. I feel as if I've been really, really lucky to have a legit publisher that took interest within the first few tries. Failure, or struggle can be real discouraging, I'm sure.
Nam and his fiance Sarah have been beyond fabulous throughout the process, and I could not be more grateful to them!
Now, without further ado... a few more illustrations that will be gracing "Andy's Dad" with their presence.

just a friendly reminder

PLEASE don't forget about Andy's Dad, and the amazing cause that the proceeds will be supporting, Luke's Wings!
Spread the word among family and friends, and don't forget that we will have a book signing and fundraiser on the books around December / January (Andy's Dad would make a great Christmas gift to those that have served and their children). Send E-Mails, encourage people to check out the blog, the facebook page, Luke's Wings homepage, and I'll keep everyone updated with a release date.
I have to say, I'm so excited -- I don't know if it can come soon enough! As always, thank you for the support!

This is something that is very important to our country, and those that serve it. It's something that is so much bigger then I am, but it is so close to my heart for many reasons...

cover art for Andy's Dad

back cover

front cover

the whole cover (front cover and back cover) -- it's almost like a panoramic, so if you can imagine the spine being the middle of the art work and the scene wraps around the book to be the front and back cover...
okay, so -- what do y'all think? It doesn't really matter actually, since I love it!
I'm too damn excited, I couldn't keep it secret any longer, and had to share. I think the art work is perfect. It's exactly what I was looking for!! Thanks so much to Nam for taking this project on.
the more promo the better!

more about Luke's Wings

okay, so I've totally just grabbed this off my girlfriend Chandler's blog (www.anotsocapitolidea.com) -- but, she knows all about "Andy's Dad", and how important this cause is to me, and I don't think that she'll mind! Thanks for the steal Chandler!! Anyhow, another little tid bit about Luke's Wings, the non-profit that will be receiving donations from the proceeds of "Andy's Dad", my children's book.
Luke’s Wings helps soldiers’ families take flight
By Alexander Hart
July 17, 2008
The ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to produce thousands of wounded and maimed casualties among the personnel deployed in those countries.
Advances in medical technology increasingly make it possible for soldiers to survive injuries that would have been fatal decades ago, but many of the wounded lose limbs or are otherwise disfigured by roadside explosives and suicide-bomb attacks. Many also suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
When these soldiers return to the United States, they often receive treatment or rehabilitation at Bethesda Naval Hospital or Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For these men and women, combat in the usual sense becomes a struggle against physical deformity and disability. For some wounded warriors, it can be a lonely process; their families may live thousands of miles away and be unable to afford to visit.
Luke’s Wings, a new non-profit founded in December 2007 by Fletcher Gill and Sarah Wingfield, hopes to change that. Luke’s Wings raises money to fly soldiers’ families to the hospitals where their loved ones are receiving treatment.
“I know what it’s like to be separated from your family,” said Army appellate lawyer Theresa Phelps, a Luke’s Wings volunteer who lives in Old Town and has been stationed abroad in the past. “Recovery time is critical, and seeing your family really lifts your spirits.”
The idea for Luke’s Wings came when Wingfield, a former Redskins cheerleader, went to Walter Reed with other Redskins ambassadors to sign autographs and meet veterans receiving treatment. There, she met a soldier who she refers to as Luke, a triple amputee who was struggling to accept what had happened to him. Wingfield spoke with him for much of the afternoon and saw the positive impact her visit had. When it came time to leave, she decided that she wanted to continue helping veterans.
She met with Gill, her long-time friend, and over that lunch, the two began getting Luke’s Wings off the ground. “I have a profound respect for our soldiers,” said Gill, vice president of tenant representation at Montview Realty Advisors. “This is my way of paying them back.”
The organization is entirely volunteer-based — everyone who helps out has a full-time job. Gill devotes about 20 hours a week, but most of the other 50 volunteers, spread out around the metropolitan D.C. area, generally give a few hours a week, he said.
Luke’s Wings helped its first soldier – Army Specialist Patrick Madison – about a month ago. Madison was driving a tank through Baghdad when it caught fire. The other four soldiers got out within seconds, but Madison was stuck for three minutes before he could escape. He inhaled large amounts of smoke, suffered damage to his eyes and was burned. Patrick also continued to suffer lingering effects from a concussion he sustained last August when his tank encountered an improvised explosive device.
In late May, Patrick arrived at Walter Reed for treatment and rehabilitation. The 20 year-old came from a family of 12, and though his father Larry was already visiting, he needed to leave on a business trip. His mother Diane wanted to come, but for the large family, money is tight, and she could not leave the youngest five children behind.
That is when Luke’s Wings stepped in – they bought three plane tickets, and the Red Cross bought three more. Soon Patrick’s mother and his siblings were on the way, just in time to celebrate his 20th birthday with him while he received outpatient care at Walter Reed.
“He didn’t know [more of his family was coming] until the day they were coming there,” Larry said. “He was obviously excited… he hadn’t seen them in a long time.”
Patrick told his mom that he spent more time going to medical appointments than he would have spent working a full-time job. “When we were there, I think he really needed us,” she said. “He’s doing a lot better now – it just took a while to get everything going.”
Diane and Patrick’s siblings took him to see the new Indiana Jones movie, and they all celebrated his birthday by going out to dinner with a gift card donated by the Red Cross. They also toured the National Mall. Diane said, “For our kids, it’ll be something they’ll never, ever forget – seeing the Mall with a veteran, with him on crutches. It’s all very much appreciated.”
Patrick is now at home in a suburb of Chicago, where he received a hero’s welcome from the local fire and police departments, as well as many area residents. Larry says that he is expected to make a full recovery, but it may take up to a year.
Toward its goal of helping more soldiers like Patrick, Luke’s Wings has raised about $18,000, Gill said. Much of that money went to start-up costs such as filing required paperwork and creating a Web site, but in addition to buying tickets for Patrick’s family, the organization now has enough money for another family to fly.
The group’s administrative costs are low because they have no physical offices. “All the money we raise for the rest of the year goes directly to buying plane tickets,” Gill said.
“Luckily, we haven’t had to [turn anyone away] yet,” Gill added. “But I think demand is going to end up exceeding supply.” For that reason, Luke’s Wings hopes to raise at least $30,000 more this year.
For a relatively new organization, Luke’s Wings has already attracted a lot of publicity. America Supports You, a government-sponsored organization that encourages Americans to help soldiers, named Luke’s Wings its “homefront organization of the week” on June 25. And popular entertainment blogger Perez Hilton put a link up to the Web site, http://www.lukeswings.org/, and encouraged his readers to donate. Gill said that they raised about $700 within 48 hours.
Moving forward, Luke’s Wings’ goal is to keep raising money, develop more consistent donations and help more soldiers. ”It’s difficult to feel like you do enough when you’re being pulled in other directions by jobs and families,” Gill said. “But we’re going to be happy with what we do.”
I'm so excited to number one, be a part of something that is so close to my heart, and my beliefs, and everything that my family stands for... and number two, to be a part of the beginning stages of a non-profit that does such good work. If we can get the word out about "Andy's Dad" and just promote our little asses off then we can really raise some money for this cause! Tell people about the blog, tell people about the book, tell people about Luke's Wings! Please, every little bit helps!! and, Thank You!

progress...
I saw the cover art for the first time today, and it's GORGEOUS. It's more then I could have ever hoped for! I want to share the art work sooooo badly, but I don't think that I will until we have handed everything over to the publisher for the final cut. Where's the surprise then?! :)
Hope that everyone had a fabulous weekend, and enjoyed the GORGEOUS weather.

coming along...

Not too much new going on in the world of "Andy's Dad". The illustrations are coming along, but it will still be awhile before we are handing over the final, edited product to the publisher. They are hoping for a late November release date.
I am hoping that we will be able to organize some sort of dinner/book signing function to raise some fundage for Luke's Wings, and get the word out about the book around Christmas or in early January.
It's all very surreal, and exciting. I am so happy to be contributing to something so important to this country, and families around this country. Those that support and love our soliders are just as important as the soilders themselves.
I promise to keep you all updated as often as possible... and don't forget to spread the word!
